Who to look for at the NFL Draft

Just 60 days after the NFL combine in Indianapolis, Indiana, center stage is on Nashville, Tennessee, this week as the NFL draft commences on April 25th. The hopes and dream of players, family members, fans and fantasy gurus begin on this evening.

The combine a test of speed, agility, and football related skills generates an early target of young talent. Those with stand out performances are expected to lead the 2019 draft class through the first round of the NFL draft.

Each year sleeper picks and later round surprises are the core by which shapes the foundation of the football franchise and provides depth to their rosters.

Traditionally quarterbacks takes center stage at the combine and draft, this year is no exception, Kyler Murray, Dwayne Haskins and Drew Lock are the top three prospects. These talents could one day transform their prospective teams but only if their are protected.

Changing the focus to our offensive lineman in the draft, I feel is the nucleus of any team’s offensive strategy a solid line can dictate the game and change the outcome. Andre Dillard from Washington State and Jonah Williams from Alabama lead this year draft prospects at this position but many teams will need to go into the deeper early rounds to find their perennial game changers.

The third round is a tremendous place to find additional offensive lineman, Wisconsin is bolstering two third round prospects this year in David Edwards and Michael Deiter, while South Carolina’s Dennis Daley and Oklahoma’s Dru Samia who protected Kyler Murray during his Heisman Trophy winning season round out the third round list of impact offensive lineman.

Be sure to reserve your spot on the couch the evening of April 25th to learn who will be selected overall and which players will be the latest name chanted from the stadium seats. The NFL Network and ESPN will be the primary networks carrying the 2019 NFL Draft!

Can Yankee’s young prospects keep Rays in sight?

The New York Yankees are back up to .500 with a 10–10 record in the American League East. The Bronx Bombers have been struggling recently due to the massive amount of injuries to their starting lineup.

Catcher Gary Sanchez injured his calf, first baseman Greg Bird injured his foot, and now outfielder Aaron Judge came out of the game April 20 against the Royals complaining of pain in his left side.

It’s incredible to see the Yankees down 10 of their starting lineup and have a record of 10–10. All the help can’t come from the veterans. It has been the young, standout players the Yankees have that have helped them keep their second place standing in their division

Young prospects Tyler Wade and Clint Frazier, along with rookie Mike Ford, have really brought their A-game to the MLB. They have helped the Yankees win major comeback divisional games as well as non-divisional.

Ford made his MLB debut on April 19 against the Kansas City Royals. In his two games played, he had six at bats, scored one run, and walked three times. Ford is currently batting .333, which means that every three at bats, he gets on base.

Frazier has been on the Yankee’s roster since 2017 when he was brought up to the majors by the team. In the 15 games he has played in this season, Frazier has had 52 at bats, scored seven runs, has had 17 hits, and four home runs.

In 2017, Frazier only had four home runs all season, which compares to the four home runs he has so far in 2019 in 15 games. His batting average shows as so far this season Frazier is hitting .327.

Wade has been apart of the Bronx Bomber family since he was drafted by the Yankees in 2013. He played with the Yankee’s minor league teams before being called up to the majors in 2017, similar to Frazier.

The Yankees are currently 3.5 games back from first place in the American League East behind the Tampa Bay Rays. The two teams haven’t played each other since February 24 during the team’s spring training day. Frazier, Wade and Ford will help the team reach new heights in hopes to take over the first place position.

The first series the Rays and the Yankees have against each other won’t be played until May 10 down in Tampa, Florida. This means that the upcoming games the Yankees have against opposing American League teams and National League teams are crucial to regaining that first place spot.

Baseball’s national holiday has arrived

March 28, 2019 was a big day for sports fans across the country: BASEBALL IS BACK! Some seem to call it a national holiday. This is only the second year in a row that every MLB team played on Opening Day.

The reigning World Series champion Boston Red Sox are on the hunt for another World Series title. The team opened up with a four-game away series against the Seattle Mariners. They went 1–3 in those games.

The World Champions have their home opener at 2:05 p.m. April 9 at Fenway Park where they will take on AL East rivals the Toronto Blue Jays.

So far, the Philadelphia Phillies are making a comeback in the National League since the signing of Bryce Harper. Currently, the Phillies are the only undefeated team left in the MLB at 4–0.

Harper was signed by the Phillies in late February, just a month before Opening Day. He signed a 13-year $330 million contract, and has become the highest paid baseball player in the league. Harper surpassed the contract of New York Yankee Giancarlo Stanton $325 million deal.

Harper’s possible signings with multiple teams made headlines for weeks because no one knew where he was going to go. There were tons of rumors that he was talking to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the San Francisco Giants, and the Phillies.

Another historic event that happened during Opening Day was the in the Bronx at Yankee Stadium where retired Yankee pitcher Mariano Rivera threw out the first pitch. Rivera played 19 years in the MLB and was unanimously voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. He will be inducted on July 22, 2019.

A week prior to the “official” Opening Day, the Mariners and the Oakland A’s traveled to Tokyo, Japan to play a series against each other. It was here that after the game was played on March 21, outfielder Ichiro Suzuki retired from baseball.

Suzuki is 45-years-old and has started in right field for 2,653 games in his career. He had a total of 4,367 hits: 1,278 hits came from the Nippon Professional Baseball and 3,089 hits came from the MLB. Suzuki didn’t play in his first American baseball game until he was 27 years old and he reached the 3,000 hit club in the MLB. He most likely will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in five years.

Baseball has only been back for about a week already and so much has happened between now and then. It sounds like every team is eligible to win the World Series this year, but we will have to wait and see how the season plays out.

The madness continues: a look into the Final Four

The brackets have been set for weeks and it comes down to the final four teams in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, or as what most people call it, March Madness.

The four teams left are Michigan State University, Auburn University, Texas Tech, and the University of Virginia. Two of these teams will be playing in their first Final Four in program history. They will meet in Minneapolis, Minnesota at U.S. Bank Stadium to battle it out for a national championship. Let’s take a quick preview on the teams that will be playing this coming weekend.

Michigan State defeated number 1 Duke 68–67 in the Elite 8 to get to the Final Four. The Spartans have not been to the Final Four since 2015. Ironically, the last time they were in the Final Four, they played Duke and lost 81–61.

Prior to the tournament, the Spartans competed in the Big 10 tournament and defeated Michigan 65–60 in the finals to be crowned Big 10 champions. Last season the team was upset by number 11 Syracuse in the NCAA Tournament getting knocked out in the second round. Syracuse defeated the Spartans 55–53.

In the past two weeks, the Tigers have defeated top teams like North Carolina in the Sweet 16 and Kentucky in the Elite 8 to get to the Final Four. This is the first time in program history that Auburn will be heading to the Final Four.

The Tigers competed in the SEC Tournament, in which they upset Missouri, South Carolina and Florida. Auburn defeated Tennessee in the SEC Tournament finals 84–64. Auburn last season never made it past the second round of play in the NCAA tournament as they lost to Clemson 84–53.

Texas Tech

Before the tournament began, Texas Tech was defeated by number 10 West Virginia in the first round of the Big 12 tournament. After the upset, the team came back strong in the tournament upsetting number 2 Michigan in the Sweet 16 and number 1 Gonzaga in the Elite 8. Texas Tech arguably has the best defense in the country. Like Auburn, this is the Red Raiders first time earning a bid to the Final Four.

Last season, the Red Raiders made it to the Elite 8 but were defeated by number 1 Villanova 71–59. Texas Tech made it back to the Elite 8 this season and this time came away with a bid to the Final Four.

This season, Virginia continues to be on top as the number one seed. The Cavaliers have not been to the Final Four since 1984 where they lost to the University of Houston 49–47 in overtime. Prior to the tournament, Virginia lost the ACC Tournament championship game as they were upset by number 4 Florida State 69–59.

Last season, Virginia came into the tournament as the number 1 seed as well. They were knocked out of the tournament in the first round early by number 16 University of Maryland–Baltimore County 74–54, who had never won a game at the NCAA Tournament before.

Virginia takes on Auburn first at 6:09 p.m. April 6 while Michigan State will play against Texas Tech at 8:49 p.m. April 6. The championship game will be held at 9 p.m. April 8 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Reasons why podcasts are the way to go

Within the past few years, podcasts have become the new way of news telling. It brings the audience closer to the reporters and sources that are telling the news. Having podcasts be on any subject possible other than news, listeners can pick what they want to hear about.

Being available on a mobile device makes podcasts easy for listeners to listen to. They can be listened to on a walk, during a workout, or during a long drive to stay awake.

Businesses and news outlets have been leaning more to podcasting for a few reasons. First, podcasting is alternative to watching a video. It requires the audience to just listen rather than focusing on the visuals. It is also hard to get all the right equipment to shoot a video.

Second, podcasts help generate new audiences. Having new audiences allows the listeners to promote your podcast to other people, who then promote it to other people, and so on and so forth.

Third, podcasts bring the audience closer to the person speaking. It is more of a one-on-one kind of feeling rather than just watching a newscast on TV. Listeners may also feel that they have something in common and relate to those speaking.

Podcasts are also very easy to create. It doesn’t take a lot of equipment to make it happen. All you really need is a good microphone, headphones, and an editing software. This can include Adobe Audition, Spreaker, and Zencastr. These recordings can then be uploaded onto websites or SoundCloud.

Podcasts can be highly engaging as well with listeners. By having audience members listening in, it gives them a better understanding of what they are hearing. Sometimes anchors can have audio issues or speak too fast on something and the public doesn’t get the information they need. With podcasts, you can talk about one subject for as long as you want without a time constraint, so that the public can be well-informed on the topic.

Finally, from personal experience, podcasting improves public speaking skills. This is something many people don’t necessarily think about. By learning how to speak on air, you can improve how you talk while not on the air.

While hosting The Ithacan’s sports podcast How IC Sports, I noticed a huge difference from the first and last episodes just based on how I was speaking. I gained more confidence while talking and interviewing athletes that it has shown through the rest of the episodes and how I interact with other people in public.

Podcasts have changed the game for news outlets in how they project the news. While having an anchor on TV telling the audience the news, podcasts give more of a personal level vibe to listeners. They can give people a better understanding of stories rather then hearing about it for under a minute on TV.

Having the personal level of a podcast brings the listener closer to the news, their stories, the sources in which they got the stories from. Podcasts hopefully will turn into the future of news telling.

Syracuse basketball coach involved in fatal car crash

Head coach of the Syracuse University men’s basketball team, Jim Boeheim, has recently faced tons of criticism. On February 20, Boeheim was driving home after Syracuse’s game against Louisville. Boeheim swerved on I-690 East to avoid a disabled vehicle when he hit 51-year-old Jorge Jimenez.

Originally, the vehicle that Jimenez was in, had skidded on a patch of ice on I-690 East and swerved into the guardrail. The driver of the 2011 Dodge Charger named Alberto, tried to change lanes causing them to skid. The car wouldn’t start and smoke was coming out of the hood of the vehicle.

Around 11:30 p.m., Boeheim was coming down the highway when he began to swerve. According to an interview done by Syracuse.com, Osvaldo Ivan Rivera and his girlfriend Mayra Quinones, who were passengers in the car with Jimenez, yelled in Spanish to get out of the way because Boeheim’s car was coming at them.

Boeheim tried to swerve between the vehicle and the guardrail to avoid the disabled vehicle. Unfortunately, Boeheim struck Jimenez and his mirror clipped Rivera, resulting in him breaking five ribs.

According to Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick, Boeheim was driving under or within the speed limit, making the case in Boeheim’s favor. He did not intentionally kill Jimenez like some people believe. It was a freak accident that happened to someone due to the road’s conditions.

Many were wondering if Boeheim was going to be coaching the game against Duke University on February 23. After consideration from Syracuse University’s athletics directory John Wildhack, Boeheim coached the game. Boeheim also said he wanted to coach because “he felt he owed it to the players.” At the game, Boeheim was welcomed by a standing ovation from the crowd.

Photo credit to Victoria Carmen’s Facebook page and credit to Syracuse Basketball’s Twitter account.

“I felt the responsibility and obligation to my players, the members of my basketball team,” Boeheim said, according to ESPN. “[The players] understand I did this feeling fully the weight of the tragic accident and its impact on the Jimenez family. This is something that will be with me, for the rest of my life.”

Boeheim took it upon himself to apologize to the Jimenez family saying “how truly devastated I am for my involvement in the loss of their loved one.” He goes on by acknowledging the grief and pain Jorge’s family is going through at this time and that Boeheim’s family is heartbroken for them. Boeheim then goes on to talk about the community saying, “I love this community and to see so many of my fellow community members rally around the Jimenez family is a reminder of how special Central New York is.”

No charges are expected to be made against Boeheim at this time due to stories lining up, negative drug tests, and Boeheim’s cooperation in the case. The team’s next game will be on the road against Wake Forest at noon March 2.

Just another Patriots scandal

Just when the world thought the New England Patriots couldn’t get involved in anymore scandals, owner Robert Kraft has been officially charged with two counts of first-degree solicitation as of February 25. News broke about Kraft back earlier last week, just a few weeks after his team won the Super Bowl.

Documents from the Palm Beach State Attorney’s Office say Kraft arrived at the Orchids of Asia Day Spa at 11 a.m. on January 20. He was videotaped receiving oral and manual sex from a woman at a spa in Jupiter, Florida. Officials say he gave her a $100 bill and another bill before leaving 15 minutes later.

This happened the day the Patriots played the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship game. Kraft flew from Florida that morning to get to Kansas City for the game. Another solicitation happened 17 hours before the January 20 incident.

According to authorities in Florida, Kraft’s arrest was part of a crackdown on sex trafficking going on. Hundreds of arrest warrants, including 23 others in Palm Beach County, have been issued as a result of a six-month investigation. Ten spas have been closed from Palm Beach to Orlando, and several people charged with sex trafficking have been taken into custody.

Kraft will take the stand at 8:30a.m. April 24. If found guilty, he can face one year in jail, a $5,000 fine, 100 hours of community service, and attend human trafficking danger classes.

Since drafting quarterback Tom Brady, the Patriots franchise has continued to grow, becoming one of the best teams in the NFL. A lot, however, has happened to the Patriots in the past 18 seasons besides the Kraft scandal; for example, “deflategate”, “spygate”, tight end Aaron Hernandez was charged with murder and committed suicide in his jail cell, and wide receiver Jason Edelman was caught doing steroids.

In “deflategate”, the Patriots were accused of using slightly deflated footballs during the AFC Championship game back in January of 2015 against the Indianapolis Colts. They did this because then the ball would be easier to throw and catch, especially in rainy and windy conditions.

The NFL’s rulebook states that the footballs used in games must be inflated to 12.5–13.5 pounds per square inch of air. Each team is required to provide officials with 12 balls that are subject to testing prior to the game. Brady was suspended four games for the tampering, the Patriots were fined $1 million and lost their first-round draft pick in the upcoming draft.

“Spygate” happened on September 9, 2007, when the team was caught videotaping their opponent’s defensive signs. This happened in the team’s season opener against the New York Jets and head coach Eric Mangini caught them in the act. This was also used against the Patriots when it came to “deflategate”.

The list can go on-and-on about the New England Patriots, but that doesn’t change the fact that they have won six Super Bowls within the last two decades. It is scandals like these that are hurting the organization’s reputation in the media and throughout the rest of the National Football League.

How does the public view journalists today?

In the public’s eye, journalists are seen as the enemy. They are the ones who try to get the story, are annoying people on street corners, or won’t stop being persistent until you answer their questions.

As a journalist myself, I have learned the difference between right and wrong when it comes to writing and producing stories. The minute I approach someone with a camera or some kind of recording device, they automatically turn the other cheek. They don’t want to be involved in a story or are simply too scared to be in front of a camera.

Social media has changed the way journalists and the public interact with one another. There is this new idea called citizen journalism in which the public uses social media to tell the news before any journalist can. They are witnessing an event first hand, which shows some kind of human interest and authenticity to the story.

Examples of where this has occurred include the U.S. Airways flight landing in the Hudson River and the Boston Marathon bombing.

Embed from Getty Images

In January 2009, Janis Krums puts out a tweet from his ferry boat on his way home from work. It says, “There’s a plane in the Hudson. I’m on the ferry going to pick up the people. Crazy.” The “Miracle on the Hudson” most likely wouldn’t have been known that quickly if it wasn’t for Krums’ tweet. This was the start of social media being used as a news source.

The Boston Marathon in 2013 was spread throughout social media has many spectators and runners were apart of the event. News outlets outside the Boston area were relying on the public to post updates on social media. The Boston Police Department was using Twitter as a source to inform the public of the search for the person who did this crime.

Embed from Getty Images

Stories that are shared on social media also have to be mobile device friendly. The audience should be able to watch stories without volume on and be visually appealing. Journalists now have to think like the audience in how will they be watching this video.

Social media has changed the game for journalists in which they sometimes have to rely on the public to get the news for them. “Newsgathering, distribution of news, and audience engagement often happen all at the same time.”

The technology we have today has brought journalists and the public together in a way where we as journalists can connect with our audiences on a more personal level. “Effective engagement with the audience includes consistent and authentic interactions, an informal yet professional tone, and openness and responsiveness to audience feedback.”

News that is shared should be more of a conversation with the journalist and the audience. As journalists, we should want to feel like we are interacting and connecting with our audience on a personal level to show that we are listening.

Journalists should be having honest engagements with their audiences. This will allow the audience to keep coming back for more while also keeping the public informed.

The relationship between journalists and the public is still strained today, but not as much as is has been in the past. Having the reality of an event come from the public, it gives other audiences a positive view on the journalists who report on it. Specifically, when it comes to how they will report the story.

Super Bowl LIII ratings reach an all-time low

Embed from Getty Images

A friend and I headed down to Buffalo Wild Wings in Ithaca, New York to watch the New England Patriots take on the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII. It is the biggest sporting event of the year in America that it is almost considered an unofficial national holiday. We arrived an hour and a half early to get a seat and order food before the place got too crazy.

Thirty minutes before the game started, the place got packed and the line was out the door for online orders people placed days before. I go back to the time I worked on New Year’s Eve at the restaurant I serve at and think, “I was in theses servers shoes and know how crazy everything is about to get.”

As the game went on, it started out very slow, with the score of 3–3 by halftime. The final score was the Patriots winning 13–3. It was also the lowest scoring game in Super Bowl history, and had the lowest TV ratings of a title game in the past 10 years.

CBS’s broadcast of the Super Bowl this year reached 98.2 million viewers nation wide. It has been one of the lowest turn outs since the Super Bowl in 2008 between the Patriots and the New York Giants. The ratings were down five million from last year’s Super Bowl between the Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles.

There are a few possibilities as to why ratings at this year’s Super Bowl were at an all-time low. First, it could have been due to the fact of what happened two weeks before the Super Bowl when the Rams took on the New Orleans Saints.

From what happened in New Orleans, fans boycotted the Super Bowl. Some Saints fans even watched their team win the Super Bowl against the Indianapolis Colts back in 2010.

Second, the Los Angeles Rams moved from St. Louis to the LA area not too long ago, so fans in St. Louis may still be upset with their team and should be representing St. Louis.

Third, while I love Maroon 5 and Adam Levine, they are not a band that is apart of the generation we are in today. Most likely why lots of girls left Buffalo Wild Wings after their halftime performance. Or waiting to see if Travis Scott would propose to girlfriend Kylie Jenner.

Finally, people are tired of watching and hearing all about the Patriots and how great they are. Similar to how NBA fans feel with having the same two teams play in the NBA Finals for the past four years.

Embed from Getty Images

The Patriots are one of the most successful sports teams in the country and whether you like them or not, you have to respect what the team has done for the city of Boston. You also have to respect what Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick have been able to do along with Rob Gronkowski, Julian Edelman and Chris Hogan.

All in all, I love football and I love watching the Super Bowl every year. It is one of the most watched sporting events in the United States, but it is starting to get globally popular. While enjoying watching the Super Bowl is a great time even if your team isn’t in it, there are multiple reasons why the ratings were down this year.
